WHAT IS THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT?

In short: it is the natural process that warms the Earth’s surface.


The exchange of incoming and outgoing radiation that heats the globe is termed as the "greenhouse effect" because it functions similarly to a greenhouse

Imagine that a greenhouse can successfully grow plants all year long, even when the weather outside is too cold for some of them to do so. How? as a result of the greenhouse's inherently warmer interior than its outside

A greenhouse's glass construction lets sunshine enter from the outside, warming the air and plants inside. The glass prevents the heat from escaping that is not absorbed by the plants. The interior becomes increasingly warmer throughout the day as more and more heat energy is added by sunlight passing through the glass (and remains warm even after the sun has set).

The Sun and the Earth both function in a similar way (on a much more massive scale and a different physical process). The earth's surface warms as a result of the sun's light passing through the atmosphere. The remainder of the Sun's energy is absorbed by the land, the water, and the atmosphere, with some of it being directly reflected back into space. The heat that Earth radiates into space is trapped by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.


BUT HERE’S WHERE THIS PROCESS PRESENTS A PROBLEM:

Other "greenhouse gases," such as methane and carbon dioxide, bind heat that would otherwise escape the Earth's atmosphere. These gases play a crucial role in ensuring that the atmosphere retains enough heat to support all forms of life on the planet when they are present in the proper balance. The Earth would lose so much heat without them that life as we know it would not be possible.

The issue arises when greenhouse gas concentrations increase too much as a result of human activity, trapping too much solar heat and upsetting the natural systems that control our climate. As the temperature rises more, extreme weather and other effects become more prevalent.

Significant and potentially disastrous changes in climate and weather can result from even slight changes in the global average temperature. Just think about the difference between 32 and 33 degrees Fahrenheit, or 0 and 1 degrees Celsius; that's the difference between ice and water.

Imagine that discrepancy continuing for several months. Imagine it occurring in an area that relies on a seasonal cycle of snow accumulation in winter and spring precipitation to feed streams and rivers and provide crops and people with the water they require for daily living. And that is but one instance.

Additionally, there are other factors besides the burning of fossil fuels that are causing carbon dioxide levels to rise. Because of their extraordinary capacity to absorb and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, trees are frequently referred to as the planet's lungs. As more trees are burned and fewer are left in the ground to absorb more carbon dioxide, deforestation, or the widespread cutting down of trees for fuel, land, or other uses, increases the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.



HOW BIG OF A DEAL IS THIS?

Climate change is transforming our world, and if we do nothing, that transforming will be significant. The process of climate change and all of its impacts on the world are what we refer to as "the climate catastrophe."

Nearly 97 percent of climate scientists concur that humans have significantly altered Earth's climate over the centuries. And it will be our responsibility to fix it.

Although the planet has gone through cycles of warming and cooling before, scientists say the present warming trend is "proceeding at a rate that is unparalleled in the past 1,300 years."

THE ADVANTAGES

GREENHOUSE EFFECT PROMOTES LIFE

Greenhouse gases prevent the entire Earth's thermal energy from escaping into space, keeping our planet habitable. The greenhouse effect is a name for this heat-trapping phenomenon. The greenhouse effect contributes to keeping the surface of the Earth at a specific temperature that is suitable for life. The world is warm enough for life to exist because of greenhouse gases.

PROTECTION FROM DANGER

All Earth's living creatures are shielded from harmful sun radiation by greenhouse gases. They reflect back into the atmosphere the portions of solar radiation that are hazardous to human life and block those portions. The most notable instance is ultraviolet or ultraviolet radiation. One of the principal greenhouse gases, ozone, functions as a shield to block UV rays from reaching the planet. The UV rays would directly reach us if the ozone layer were to disappear because there would be no protection from them.

THE DIS-ADVANTAGES

GLOBAL WARMING

The biggest drawback of the greenhouse effect is unquestionably this. The gradual increase in the planet's surface temperature is known as global warming. Although this warming trend has been around for a while, the burning of fossil fuels has greatly accelerated its pace over the past century. The amount of fossil fuels burned has increased in tandem with the growth of the human population.

RISE IN SEA LEVELS

Sea levels rise as a result of water heating up and expanding as a result of the greenhouse gases' continued warming of the Earth. Sea-level rise's repercussions are already being felt, and the future seems bleak. First, water is encroaching on coastal areas more and more, which threatens crops, homes, or recreational places by creating soil erosion. In addition, wetlands are flooded and aquifers are polluted, which has an impact on the local flora and fauna and results in the loss of habitat for several kinds of fish, birds, plants, and other organisms.

IMPACT ON THE MARINE LIFE

Our oceans are losing oxygen as a result of greenhouse gas emissions. According to marine researchers, fish species like tuna and swordfish, which are renowned as the deep-water divers of the ocean because they hunt at depths of 200 metres, are frequently rising to the surface lately.

The cause of this is that rising sea temperatures have depleted the oxygen in the ocean's deepest waters, making it difficult for predators to breathe, let alone hunt, in those conditions. The oceans warm up as the planet's atmosphere absorbs more heat.

These all point to the same conclusion: if we do not take care of the environment, we will all suffer the negative effects that this will bring. All of our acts are undermining and shortening our very existence. After reading all of this, one thing to consider is if you believe it is preserving or destroying our planet.
